Situated in the north of the Deux-Sèvres department, the Thouarsais is ideally located between the Loire Valley and the Atlantic coast. The 24 communes offer a varied landscape of agricultural plains, hedged farmland and vineyards. The GR36 and the Vélo Francette, two major national walking and cycling routes, cross the area and allow visitors to discover our natural, historical, cultural and leisure heritage.
St Varent
Crossed by the Thouaret River, Saint-Varent is a genuine haven of greenery and tranquility, located on the border between the Vendée bocage and the plains of Haut-Poitou. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, followed by Celtic, Gaulish, and Gallo-Roman populations, as evidenced by numerous archaeological remains.
The Thouaret meanders through the heart of the village center before joining the Thouet River a few kilometers downstream. This aquatic setting is captivating in every season, with spots like Volbine, near the mills (Pont and Conquenuche mills), and several public areas designed for relaxation such as Donneuil and the gardens of the Old Bridge.
This natural balance also supports one of the 27 bat maternity colonies in the department. The commune is a signatory of the conservation charter protecting these small mammals.
