Situated in the north of the Deux-Sèvres department, the Thouarsais is ideally located between the Loire Valley and the Atlantic coast. The 24 communes offer a varied landscape of agricultural plains, hedged farmland and vineyards. The GR36 and the Vélo Francette, two major national walking and cycling routes, cross the area and allow visitors to discover our natural, historical, cultural and leisure heritage.
St Martin de Sanzay
Located in the northern part of Deux-Sèvres, near the gates of the Loire Valley castles and the vineyards of the Saumur region, the commune of Saint-Martin-de-Sanzay offers its residents and visitors wonderful natural and cultural heritage. The village is built on the right bank of the Thouet River, a tributary of the Loire that flows through the commune from end to end.
Until the French Revolution, the commune was part of both the Poitou and Anjou regions, subject to both authorities. Regarding the church, it falls under the parish of Thouars.
The local population is spread across several small villages scattered throughout the territory. These villages usually consist of about ten houses, sometimes more, grouped around a central square or along a path. Most of them are very old and have been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages.
